Gnash – I Hate U I Love U Ft Olivia O’ Brien Review
Nowadays newcomers are definitely coming in with good music to listen to, but what is surely missing is creative originality. That precisely said, has been taken up by the L.A based Gnash. This time producing a sensational piano ballad I Hate U I Love U Featuring the vocals of Olivia O’ Brien, capturing the listener in a slow piano tune with deep lyrics.
I Hate U I Love U released February 17, 2016 is a part of the second EP; US, produced by Gnash, his previous EP being U released in 2015 on sound cloud.
The single saw critical acclaim in Australia and toppled down Lucas Graham’s 7 years. On April 19, 2016, the single topped out the ARIA Charts at No.1, a feat first for Gnash and Olivia O’ Brien alike. Truly something to be proud off. Seeing the massive impact the single caused in Australia, it didn’t take long for the single to edge in the US Billboard Hot 100 Charts and position at No.55. Elsewhere in the European regions, the track saw better than average performance staying well above the No. 40 mark in most countries Top 100 charts.
By Gnash what can be expected is that his, lyrics = truth. What that means is that, most of his songs are about love and includes emotions. Not feelings that you factiously fathom rather feelings which you endure and which are mean to be kept reserved, to be shared with a best friend or written a diary. To bring that out in a song, playing with the tear glands of the listener is surely going to stand out and make it memorable.
Gnash is known to produce slow ballad tracks stressing on vocals and finger claps, and this isn’t any different but nonetheless, this time the slow melodic combination of the tune, along with the duo of Gnash and O’ Brien’s vocals truly create a self-realizing piece of music.
The single talks about how Olivia feels used in a relationship, but how she truly misses every aspect of the time she spent in it and the person itself. In the lyrics “Feeling used. But I’m Still missing you. And I can’t. See the end of this. Just wanna feel your kiss. Against my lips. And now all this time. Is passing by” Gnash comes in to vocal much longer in the verse, signaling the man could be reason of the split and it’s his way of acknowledging everything she is expressing and confronting his feeling to her while battling the conflicts around his life.
The chorus is left for O’ Brien’s emotional and moving voice uttering I hate you, “I love you. I hate that I love you
don’t want to but I can’t put nobody else above you”
On March 7, 2016 a video was released on gnash’s YouTube account.
