DAN + SHAY – From The Ground Up Review
Sometimes great things start with the saddest of inspirations, not all has to be lost when you have the ability to convey it out so exceptionally well. That is what exactly Dan Smyer’s and Shay Mooney of the country duo DAN + SHAY have been able to with their upcoming new single From the Ground Up.
Both in their early to mid-20 have this transcending energy that enables them to convey, well beyond their age and showcase great wisdom through their music. From the Ground Up is their upcoming lead single from their second studio album Obsessed released in 2016. The track Released under Warner Bro’s Nashville saw first selling under retailers on February 6, 2016 and began first airplay on American country radio on February 22, 2016
From the Ground Up saw favorable reviews from the critics as a song with compelling musical tone and an honest representation of a sad ever green memory. The track saw reaching to a peak at No.9 on the US Hot Country Songs. Track saw moderate performance on the US Billboard Hot 100 and Canada Country, at No.59 and 42 respectively.
The inspiration for the song came from an emotional period of the duo’s lives, when Smyer’s grandfather had just passed away and Shay’s grandfather was in the hospital. Both of them were compelled to write a true piece of a ‘send-off’ representing a true love song. Based upon that both of their grandparents were married for sixty plus years.
A strong pop ballad, with a soothing melody and settling drum thumps, truly settles in the listener for a nostalgic life rewind.
The lyrics convey a story of an elderly couples lasting love, “Grandma and grandpa painted a picture of 65 years. And one little house. More than a memory. More than saying I do” committing to a relationship with a deep connection and making sure to stick together at all times of need. “And we’ll build this love from the ground up. For worse or for better. And I will be all you need. Beside you I’ll stand through the good and the bad”
We see less of a structured song, more of a mini story, with less repetitions and more for listener’s engagement. Which is just one of the strong suits of the song.
A video for ‘From the Ground Up’ was released on February 5, 2016 directed by Shaun Silvia. It shows alternating scenes from different times of an elderly couple’s marriage. The depiction of a grandmother sharing stories about her wedding and younger years with her granddaughter, who is about to be married; basing on the concept of lasting love.
